I hope that you are all enjoying the long Melbourne summer. Sokol Melbourne has had a busy start to 2017 with improvements to our building and exciting and well-attended events like Chinaski.
I hope that you will all continue to support future events planned to take place at the club during the remainder of the year. A big thank you to the Czech Republic for sending out the Czech actors who presented a very entertaining afternoon for the students of Czech School in Melbourne at Sokol recently. The afternoon was enjoyed by all who attended.
I am sure you will wish to congratulate and encourage the new Sokol Management Committee for their enthusiasm and teamwork in improving not only the club but planning events. We trust that the spirit of Sokol will survive and thrive for the future generations with Czech and Slovak heritage, as well as others who take an interest.
I am sad to say that the 28th of March 2017 will be the final Tuesday lunch provided by Mrs. Vera Zlaty and her helpers, Trevor and Diane Humphries (Geelong) Michael Ruzicka and myself. My mother, whilst wanting to continue the tradition, has found it difficult to keep preparing the lunches since the death of her husband Eduard. I have lived in Noosa since 1992 and have only helped with the lunches when I came here to help my parents when their health started to decline. I started by doing the table set up only. I completed a certificate 4 in commercial cooking in 2015. Then I started to help in the kitchen. My Aunt Diane Zidek also helped baking the apple strudel in 2015. I thank all the people that have assisted my parents over the years. The lunches will now be made by Alena Spirochova and Vlasta Sustek.I thank them for taking over the Tuesday lunches.
Honza Sedlak, a member of the Committee, offered to take over the senior lunches at the last Committee meeting. He is in Czech Republic until later this year and then will inform the club of his future plans for the kitchen.
Please check the Sokol Melbourne Facebook and/or the Sokol Melbourne Inc website for more information about future Sokol events.
Our annual Czech/Slovak Trivia evening will be held on Saturday 20 May starting at 7.30pm. The team who are kindly preparing the questions include Helena Simkova and Hana Flanderova. We are following the same format as last year with a PowerPoint presentation of pictures, videos etc. and a choice of 4 possible answers.
Each table appoints a captain who manages their teams answer sheet. Tables will compete against each other. Each table group arranges to bring their own snacks, preferably typical Czech /Slovak snacks. Prizes will be given for the winners with the highest number of correct answers, plus there will be a prize for the table with the most delicious display of food.
All questions will be in English as well as in Czech. We hope it will be an educational evening for all who attend. Please encourage your family, friends, children and grandchildren to come and learn more about the Czech Republic and Slovakia.
Entrance fee is $10 to help maintain the club’s premises. We can put a table together people want to come but do not have enough to fill a table of ten. You will need to book so a table will be prepared and ready for you. The contact number to book is 0411143980.
